A poor diet is a serious risk factor leading to liver disease. The European Commission estimates that 27% of European men and up to 38% of women are obese.
The EU is addressing this "growing epidemic" through a series of legislation such of food labelling, food advertising and health claims. On the other hand, the EU has been encouraging the industry to commit to voluntary initiatives to reduce obesity through their participation in the EU Platform on Diet, Physical Activity and Health (commonly referred to as the 'Obesity Platform').
EASL is closely monitoring these policy developments.
