EASL recommends extending the Recommendation to liver cancer for high-risk groups living with chronic liver diseases; these patients are identifiable, have a high risk of liver cancer, and can be offered curative treatment if their liver cancer is diagnosed early. Furthermore, liver cancer detection tools are easily available and affordable.
EASL and other health organisations wrote a joint press release with regards to the Parliamentary Report “Strengthening Europe in the fight against cancer” (BECA report). The health community is appalled that Members of European Parliament have listened to the alcohol industry rather than to scientists and public health experts.
Joint letter signed by EASL and 15 organisations, was addressed to all Members of the European Parliament. The scope of this initiative was to safeguard the BECA report (whose 145 amendments were fully approved in December 2021) without further changes during the plenary vote on 16 February.
On the occasion of World Cancer Day and ahead of the plenary vote on the report developed by the BECA committee expected on 15 February, eleven European health organisations call on MEPs to adopt the report with no weakening of its recommendations on cancer prevention.
The European Association for the Study of the Liver (EASL) aims to contribute to answering this question by stressing the necessity of extending screening programmes to liver cancer, notably for a well-defined population of people at risk of developing liver cancer.
