A tribute to Dr Hannes Hagström
EASL is deeply saddened by the passing of Dr Hannes Hagström, Consultant Hepatologist at Karolinska University Hospital and Professor at Karolinska Institutet.
Hannes was not only an exceptional clinician scientist, but also a deeply valued colleague, collaborator, mentor, and friend to many across the international liver community, who was already becoming one of the leading voices in hepatology. His work transformed the understanding of steatotic liver disease, liver fibrosis, and long-term outcomes in MASLD, helping to shape both research and clinical practice for the benefit of patients worldwide.
Through his scientific rigour, generosity in collaboration, and commitment to advancing hepatology, Hannes made a lasting contribution to EASL guideline development and to the global effort to better understand and manage MASLD. Despite his many achievements, he will be remembered just as much for his kindness, humility, warmth, and willingness to support others.
The profound sadness and shock expressed by colleagues around the world reflect the deep respect and affection so many held for him. His passing is an immense loss to our field, and to all who had the privilege of knowing and working alongside him.
Our heartfelt thoughts and condolences are with his family, loved ones, friends, colleagues, and patients during this incredibly difficult time.
