Celebrating Excellence in Hepatology: EASL Congress 2026 Award Ceremonies

EASL is proud to announce the recipients of this year’s prestigious awards, which will be presented during EASL Congress 2026 in Barcelona, 27–30 May. The award ceremonies are a highlight of the congress calendar and a cherished opportunity for the hepatology community to come together and honour exceptional contributions to liver science, clinical care, and research.

Opening Ceremony – Wednesday 27 May, 10:30–11:30 CEST

Several awards will be presented during the Opening Ceremony:

  • Emerging Leader Awards – Recognising outstanding early-career researchers shaping the future of hepatology, this year’s recipients are Laura J. Pallett (University College London), Panu Luukkonen (University of Helsinki), and Elisa Pose (Hospital Clínic, Barcelona).
  • Excellence in Liver Care Award 2026 – Presented to Marie Skaarup Christiansen in recognition of her exceptional dedication to patient care in hepatology.
  • Daniel Alagille Award – EASL’s research fellowship dedicated to paediatric or adult genetic cholestatic diseases, awarded to Juan Bañares to support his project Mechanisms of senescence, inflammation, and vascular pathways in rare genetic cholestatic liver diseases with a focus on cystic fibrosis and telomere biology disorders.

General Session 1 – Thursday 28 May, 10:30–12:30 CEST

  • European Recognition Awards – Honouring distinguished contributions to hepatology in Europe, this year’s recipients are Paolo Angeli (introduced by Patrick Kamath) and David Adams (introduced by Tom Hemming Karlsen).
  • PSC Partners Abstract Award – Presented to the best abstract submitted in the field of primary sclerosing cholangitis. The recipient will be announced during the congress.
  • Oral Presentation Awards – Recognising the best oral presentations delivered throughout the congress. Recipients will be announced during the session.

General Session 2 – Friday 29 May, 10:30–12:30 CEST

  • International Recognition Award – Presented to Florence Wong (University of Toronto; introduced by Zita Galvin) in recognition of her outstanding contributions to hepatology on the international stage.
  • EASL Community Award – Recognising exemplary commitment to the hepatology community, this year’s award goes to Cynthia Levy (University of Miami; introduced by Adrielly Martins).
  • Poster Awards – Celebrating excellence across scientific poster presentations. Recipients will be announced during the session.
