About the Role
In an era of rapid technological advancement, harnessing the power of artificial intelligence (AI) has become paramount in revolutionising healthcare. Within hepatology, AI presents an invaluable opportunity to transform the landscape of diagnosis, treatment, and understanding of liver disease. With its capacity to analyse vast amounts of data swiftly and accurately, AI offers the potential to uncover novel scientific insights, improve diagnostic accuracy, and personalise patient care by predicting response to treatments. It also has an exciting role in transforming the way educational content is put together and delivered. Although there are several advantages to the utilisation of AI, it is incumbent on us to become knowledgeable of associated potential pitfalls and harm and how to utilise these tools responsibly.
The EASL AI Task Force is comprised of experts in the field and is designed to shape the association`s approach to AI for the benefit of members and the wider hepatology community including patients and the general public.
The AI Task Force advices the EASL Governing Board in key strategic areas:
- Research: Advancing large-scale, collaborative research initiatives among the hepatology community, with a particular emphasis on navigating data-sharing challenges and appropriate use of AI.
- Education: Developing innovative AI-driven tools and platforms to transform learning experiences for researchers, physicians, allied health professionals, patients, policy makers and the public.
- Clinical decision making: Provide guidance on leveraging AI algorithms to assist healthcare professionals in diagnosis and patient management, integrating insights from all relevant stakeholders to enhance the decision-making process.
- EASL Congress and other events: Exploring ways to integrate AI for enhanced content delivery and event optimisation.
- EASL Journals: Ensuring the quality of AI-related research and topics.
- Industry Collaboration: Forming strategic partnerships to drive AI advancements relevant to liver diseases.
- Operational: Work with technical service providers and the EASL Office team to enhance business efficiency and customer service.
EASL is now recruiting two new members for the AI Fask Force. It welcomes applications from individuals with a strong interest and demonstrated expertise in the responsible development, evaluation, implementation, or governance of artificial intelligence in hepatology and liver diseases.
We are particularly interested in candidates who can contribute complementary expertise across one or more of the following areas:
- Clinical hepatology and AI: hepatologists, gastroenterologists, transplant physicians, or allied healthcare professionals with experience in the application, evaluation, or implementation of AI tools in liver disease, including diagnosis, risk stratification, treatment allocation, clinical decision support, patient monitoring, or guideline-based care.
- Data science, bioinformatics, engineering, and computer science: researchers or professionals with expertise in machine learning, deep learning, large language models, computer vision, multimodal AI, natural language processing, bioinformatics, omics, real-world data, federated learning, or digital health, preferably with direct experience in hepatology, gastroenterology, oncology, transplantation, or biomedical applications.
- Clinical research and validation of AI tools: candidates with experience in study design, multicentre collaborations, model validation, benchmarking, clinical trials, prospective evaluation, health technology assessment, or real-world implementation of AI systems.
- Responsible AI, ethics, regulation, and data governance: individuals with expertise in trustworthy AI, bias and fairness, explainability, patient safety, privacy, data sharing, GDPR, regulatory science, medical device pathways, or ethical and societal implications of AI in healthcare.
- Education and communication: candidates interested in developing AI-based educational tools, training programmes, digital learning resources, or initiatives to improve AI literacy among clinicians, researchers, allied health professionals, patients, policy makers, and the wider public.
Applicants should demonstrate a commitment to EASL’s mission and to the responsible, transparent, and patient-centred use of AI in hepatology. The Task Force aims to ensure a multidisciplinary composition and therefore encourages applications from both clinical and non-clinical experts, including physicians, researchers, bioinformaticians, computer scientists, engineers, data scientists, ethicists, implementation scientists, and other professionals working at the interface of AI and liver disease.
