Description

Dear Colleagues and Friends,

We are very pleased to invite you to a very special symposium. Prof. Michael P. Manns turns 70 in November 2021. Over the span of three decades he has had an impressive and uniquely important impact on Hannover Medical School: As Director of the Department of Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Endocrinology, as speaker of several collaborative research centres (SFBs) and most recently as President of Hannover Medical School. In Germany, Europe and worldwide Michael Manns has shaped the developments in gastroenterology and hepatology in various functions in academic societies, scientific committees and as spokesperson for numerous research consortia. This bygone work, but also the outlook into the future will be the focus of the event.

On Thursday evening (18 November) we will host a brilliant expert roundtable that will be streamed online. Long-time international companions of Michael Manns will not only look back on the development of hepatology in Europe over the last five decades but also discuss their views on current and future challenges.

Friday (19 November) is planned as a hybrid event with live lectures in lecture hall F of the MHH, complemented by virtual presentations. In four high-level sessions we will discuss issues related to personalized medicine in the areas of gastrointestinal oncology, autoimmune liver disease, liver failure and liver transplantation as well as viral hepatitis. We are delighted to have a truly exceptional faculty, staffed by fellows and friends of Michael Manns. In addition to Leibniz Prize winners and numerous full professors and Department Chairs, Michael Houghton from Canada, who received the Nobel Prize in Medicine last year for the discovery of the hepatitis C virus, will also speak.

Moreover we would like to invite you to the 51st Hanover Seminar of Gastro-enterology which concludes the event series on Saturday, 20 November 2021. This regional symposium will be held in German by fellows of Prof. Manns. Common clinical questions in gastroenterology and hepatology including endoscopy and abdominal ultrasound will be discussed on a case-by-case basis.

We are looking forward to an exciting and interactive meeting and hope to welcome you in Hannover in November.

Best regards,
Nisar Malek, Christian Strassburg, Christian Trautwein, Heiner Wedemeyer
