Prof. Manuela Merli

Associated Professor working at the Gastroenterology Division of the Department of Clinical Medicine, University of Rome ‘’La Sapienza’’, Rome, Italy. Main research lines of Prof Merli are in the field of liver cirrhosis and liver transplantation with particular focus on nutrition and metabolism, portal hypertension, hepatic encephalopathy, bacterial infections. In these fields she has been invited speaker in national and international Congress. She is honorary member of the European Society of Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition and participate in the committee for the first Guidelines for Nutrition in Liver Disease and Transplantation for this society. Prof Merli published 160 original articles in international peer reviewed journal and 37 book chapters in the field of gastroenterology and Hepatology.

Prof. Martin Rössle

Dr. Martin Rössle gained his medical degree in 1976 from the University of Freiburg, Germany. After a 2-year postdoctoral fellowship in the Biochemical Institute, he began his clinical career in the University Hospital Freiburg as a gastroenterologist and hepatologist. He obtained several grants from the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) and a research fellowship in 1985 and 1986 at the National Institute of Health (NIH), Bethesda, USA. In 1988, Martin Rössle conducted the first TIPS implantation together with Götz Richter and Julio Palmaz.

Currently, Martin Rössle is a Consultant at the University Hospital of Freiburg and the Städtisches Klinikum of Saarbrücken and of Karlsruhe. He has performed more than 2000 TIPS interventions and published over 250 publications, most of which deal with liver diseases and TIPS.
