Are you ready to boost your leadership skills in EASL’s governance?   

 EASL is now looking to fill the following positions:  

  1. Vice-Secretary 
  2. Treasurer 
  3. Public Health Councillor 
  4. One Scientific Committee Member 
  5. Two Young Investigators Task Force Members  
  6. Two Nurses & AHPs Task Force Members 

The call for all of these positions is open 13 February – 26 March 2023 (23:59 CET)

The successful candidate will have an established track record of original research and a strong standing within the clinical community. They will have some evidence of managerial experience and will relish working in a dynamic team. 

The Vice-Secretary serves for two years in close collaboration with EASL’s Secretary General. After the completion of this two-year term, the Vice-Secretary will automatically become Secretary General for a further period of two years.  

Eligibility criteria: 

  • The candidate must be professionally active in a European country, as defined by the World Health Organization.
  • To ensure geographical diversity, candidates employed in Denmark, Germany, and the United Kingdom can apply but may be considered less favourably. 
  • The candidate must be under 56 years of age on 1 June 2023 (in case of official parental leave, the eligible age is calculated by deducting the documented months of parental leave in accordance with applicable EU regulations from their actual age). 
  • The candidate must be an EASL member when applying and would be expected to have been a long-standing member. 
  • An individual who is currently a member of the Governing Board can apply for and be elected as the Vice-Secretary during their mandate if they have not held the position they apply for before. If such individual is elected during their mandate as Governing Board member, they shall resign from the latter position  
  • An individual who completed their mandate in the Governing Board will have to wait for at least one (1) year before being eligible to apply for and be elected as the Vice-Secretary provided they have not held this position before.

Review process: 

  • All submitted applications will be reviewed for eligibility by the EASL office. 
  • Shortlisted candidates will be invited for a 45-minute interview with the EASL Governing Board.  
  • The interview will consist of a five-minute presentation from the candidate covering their qualifications and motivation for becoming Vice-Secretary, followed by a Q&A session with the Governing Board. 
  • The successful candidate will be reviewed by the EASL Ethics Committee, prior to being presented to the EASL General Assembly in June 2023. Their appointment to the Governing Board is dependent on confirmation by and at the General Assembly.

The Treasurer shall be nominated by the Governing Board and elected by the General Assembly for a term of five years and cannot be re-elected. Prior to starting their term as Treasurer, they shall serve as Treasurer-elect for one year, shadowing the current Treasurer. 

The Treasurer has the following duties:  

  • To prepare the proposal to be reviewed by the Management Committee and then approved by the Governing Board on the following matters:  
  • Investment strategy; 
  • Annual budget; and  
  • Financial statements.  
  • To monitor the management of the Association’s resources and to report any material event to the Governing Board.  

Eligibility criteria: 

  • The candidate must be professionally active in a European country, as defined by the World Health Organization.  
  • The candidate must be an EASL member when applying and would be expected to have been a long-standing member. 
  • An individual who is currently a member of the Governing Board can apply for and be elected as the Treasurer during their mandate if they have not held the position they apply for before. If such individual is elected during their mandate as Governing Board member, they shall resign from the latter position

The Public Health Councillor is nominated by the Governing Board and elected by the General Assembly for a term of four years and cannot be re-elected. Prior to serving as Councillor, they shall serve as Public Health Councillor-elect for one year, shadowing the current Councillor. 

The Public Health Councillor is commissioned by the Governing Board to support the development and implementation of EASL Policy at the Public Health level and to raise the awareness and profile of liver health in the EU Institutions (Parliament, Commission and Council), ultimately improving public health policies and EU funding for research in the area of liver health. In doing so, the Public Health Councillor acts in cooperation with the Policy, Public Health and Advocacy Committee which they chair.  

The Public Health Councillor reports to the Governing Board.  

Please note: 

  • The candidate must have an MD and/or a degree in public health. 
  • Particular attention will be paid to candidates with a strong background in Public Health, Policy, and Advocacy work. 
  • The candidate must be professionally active in a European country, as defined by the World Health Organization.

EASL is now calling for applications for one new member to join the Scientific Committee. The term for these members is from June 2023 to (and including) the EASL Congress 2026. 

Please note: 

  • The candidate must be an EASL member when applying. 
  • To ensure adequate representation of all EASL tracks we are seeking a basic/translational scientist with a track record in hepatology research. 
  • The candidate must be professionally active in a European country, as defined by the World Health Organization 
  • To maintain geographical diversity, professionals working in the following countries are excluded from this call, as they are already represented in the Scientific Committee: Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Romania, Spain, and the United Kingdom. 
  • The candidate must be under 48 years of age in June 2023 (in case of official parental leave, the eligible age is calculated by deducting the documented months of parental leave in accordance with applicable EU regulations from their actual age).

The mission of the Young Investigators Task Force is to contribute to educational activities aimed at Young Investigators in the wider liver community and to engage the next generation of liver disease experts. 

 The Young Investigators Task Force advises the EASL Governing Board and the EASL Office on the following activities: 

  • YIs Seminar, dealing with topics of interest for YIs that are not covered by other sessions at the EASL Congress. The scope of the Seminar is scientific.  
  • YIs Forum, focusing on career aspects, the professional and personal life of YIs and boosting knowledge-sharing. 
  • YI Networking Event, a social event taking place on Thursday evening during the on-site EASL Congress aiming to enhance networking between the YIs.   
  • Communication/Newsletters: Members advise the EASL Office on communication actions for social media and newsletter creation, sent to YIs every two months. 
  • When preparing EASL Congress, EASL Summits, and other events, the YI Task Force may be consulted for ideas, suggestions, and input.  

Term: 

Young Investigators Task Force members serve for a period of two years. The term for these two positions is from June 2023 to June 2025. 

Eligibility criteria: 

  • The candidate must be professionally active in a European country, as defined by the World Health Organization.   
  • The candidate must be an EASL member when applying.  
  • The candidate should be preferably under 35 years of age (may be extended up to 40 years old in lieu of parental leave) in June 2023 (in case of official parental leave, the eligible age is calculated by deducting the documented months of parental leave in accordance with applicable EU regulations from their actual age).  
  • Particular attention will be paid to candidates with a strong background in one of the following fields: Liver tumours, Immune Mediated & Cholestatic Diseases, Metabolism Alcohol & Toxicity and Viral Hepatitis.
  • The task force already has members from Austria and France. Candidates from other countries are especially encouraged to apply.

Are you supporting and advancing care for people with liver disease through clinical excellence or research?  

Are you ready to shape the educational/research and clinical priorities of EASL’s Nurses and Allied Health Professionals Task Force? 

Since it was founded in 2016, the Nurses and AHPs Task Force has grown from strength to strength. EASL is now calling for nominations for two new members for this Task Force. For this round we are specifically seeking one Nurse member and one Allied Health Professional member. The term for these members is from EASL Congress 2023 (July 2023) to EASL Congress 2025 (June 2025). 

Eligibility criteria 

  • The candidate must be professionally active in a European country, as defined by the World Health Organization.  
  • The candidate must be an EASL member when applying. 
  • Particular attention will be paid to male candidates to maintain gender balance in the Task Force, in accordance with the EASL equality, diversity, and inclusion policy statement. 
  • As the Task Force already has members from Denmark, Spain, Austria and the United Kingdom, candidates from other countries are especially encouraged to apply.  

The call is open from 13 February to 26 March 2023 (23:59 CET).
