Strategy and scope

EASL’s Policy, Public Health, and Advocacy strategy focuses on engaging four target audiences: policymakers, members of the publics, health professionals, and patients. EASL creates curated activities for each target group in order to reduce the burden of liver disease and promote liver health across Europe

Listen to past and present members of the EASL Policy, Public Health, and Advocacy Committee discuss the importance of public health for liver health and how health and allied professionals can become more involved in creating a healthier Europe for all

Policy priorities

In 2020, an EASL-Lancet Commission reported on the status of liver health and care across Europe. A key message of this report was a call to action for health professionals, nations, and the international community to implement a significant paradigm shift within liver care. This paradigm shift included an emphasis on prevention of liver disease through evidence-based public health measures that reduce per capita intake of alcohol and unhealthy foods, and tackle obesity, viral hepatitis, and stigma. EASL is focused on public health and policy activities which reduce the burden within 5 key disease areas:

  1. Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Steatotic Liver Disease (MASLD)
  2. Alcohol-related Liver Disease (ArLD)
  3. Viral Hepatitis
  4. Liver Cancer
  5. Rare Liver Diseases
