New EASL Clinical Practice Guidelines on TIPS

EASL has published its first Clinical Practice Guidelines dedicated to transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt (TIPS), providing comprehensive, evidence-based recommendations on the use of TIPS in patients with cirrhosis.

Key advancements

Owing to its established role in the management of complications of portal hypertension, TIPS is increasingly used around the world. Recent years have witnessed several developments in its application, including an expanding range of indications and advances in patient selection, pre-TIPS assessment, procedural techniques, and post-procedure follow-up. These developments prompted EASL to convene a panel of international experts, along with patient representatives, to formulate comprehensive guidelines dedicated to this complex yet potentially life-saving intervention.

These guidelines emphasise not only when and how TIPS should be performed, but also how best to assess patients before the procedure and manage them afterward. The aim of these EASL guidelines is to comprehensively address all aspects of TIPS in patients with cirrhosis. The 2025 EASL TIPS Guidelines mark a significant step forward in unifying global practice standards, providing a pragmatic and patient-centered roadmap for clinicians.
