Meet the organisers

William Bernal

William Bernal is Consultant and Professor of Liver Critical Care Medicine in the Liver Intensive Therapy Unit at the Institute of Liver Studies at Kings College Hospital in London UK.

He is part of a small consultant team running a 19 bedded specialist critical care unit devoted to the care of patients with severe liver and pancreatic disease, and which serves one of the largest liver transplantation programs in Europe.

He trained in General Medicine at the Royal London and St Bartholomew’s Hospital in London and in Hepatology and Intensive Care Medicine at Guys and St Thomas and Kings College Hospitals. His research interests include the pathogenesis and management of acute and acute-on-chronic liver failure ACLF) , and the utilization of liver transplantation in emergency settings. He is Chief Investigator on an ongoing NIHR-funded project using linked national patient level datasets to determine optimal care pathways for critically-ill patients with chronic liver disease, and led the recent national programme to introduce prioritised liver transplantation for patients with ACLF.

Brian Hogan

Brian Hogan joined UCL and RFL as the Lead Clinician in Liver Critical Care and a Consultant in Critical Care Medicine and Hepatology in 2022, specialising in critical care for patients with liver failure and those needing liver transplantation. He is experienced in all aspects of liver disease.

Before returning to UCL, from 2017-2022 he was a Consultant in Liver Critical Care and Hepatology at King’s College Hospital, London. He qualified from University College London Medical School and completed specialist training in Critical Care Medicine, Hepatology and Liver Transplant at The Royal Free Hospital, Guy’s and St Thomas Hospitals and at King’s College Hospital.

Tasneem Pirani

Dr Tasneem Pirani is a Consultant in Liver Intensive Care, General Intensive Care and ECMO at King’s College Hospital, with a background in General Internal Medicine and Hepatology.

She is the current Clinical lead for the Liver Intensive Therapy Unit, which specialises in the care of patients with complex liver and pancreato-biliary diseases, as well as peri-liver transplantation in one of the largest liver transplant programs in Europe. She has recently been appointed as the Intensive Care representative for the British Liver Transplant Group, and is an Honorary Senior Lecturer within the School of Immunology & Microbial Sciences at King’s College London. Her research interests include ALF and the use of extracorporeal therapies, as well as the intensive care management and optimisation of ACLF, particularly in the diagnosis and treatment of MDR infections as a precipitant of the syndrome. Her clinical interests include the management of pregnancy related liver failure, and haematological malignancies in the ICU, and leads on the ICU management of complications of CAR-T therapy.
