Recent progress in basic science and clinical medicine on liver cirrhosis and portal hypertension is noteworthy. Notable developments include molecular and cellular mechanisms of liver fibrosis leading to cirrhosis, vascular biology relevant to portal hypertension, non-invasive assessment of fibrosis and portal hypertension, and novel pharmacological, surgical, endoscopic therapies and interventional radiology for symptoms and complications associated with advanced chronic liver disease. Liver cirrhosis is also considered the origin of more advanced liver failure and liver cancer.
