Privacy Policy

EASL has a clear vision for its website: to become The Home of Hepatology Online. Our aim is to become the place where everyone involved in Hepatology can find, discuss and share the knowledge they need to prevent and cure Liver Disease.

This website exists solely to benefit the Hepatology community.

Everything we do on this website is designed to provide a better service to our Users.

EASL respects every User's right to privacy and our intention is to be as transparent as possible at all times in the way we use our Users' information.

This Privacy Policy governs the manner in which EASL collects, uses, maintains and discloses information collected from users (each, a "User") of the website ("Site"). This privacy policy applies to the Site and all products and services offered by EASL. For users of the Community Portal, it should be read in conjunction with the Terms of Use of this platform.

Personal identification information

We may collect personal identification information from Users in a variety of ways, including, but not limited to, when Users visit our site, become a member, register on the Community Portal, subscribe to the newsletter, fill out a form, and in connection with other activities, services, features or resources we make available through our Site. Users may be asked for, as appropriate, name, email address, mailing address, phone number, institution affiliation, other professional details or credit card information.

We receive additional digital information about a User when he or she starts interacting with the Site and in particularly the Community Portal: for instance, when a User visits a page, interacts with the content, posts an article, comments on a post, adds an image, agrees with a post or shares it.

Users may, however, visit our Site anonymously. We will collect personal identification information from Users only if they voluntarily submit such information to us. Users can always refuse to supply personally identification information, except that it may prevent them from engaging in certain Site related activities.

Non-personal identification information

We may collect non-personal identification information about Users whenever they interact with our Site. Non-personal identification information may include the browser name, the type of computer, mobile phone or other device used to connect to the site and other technical information about Users means of connection to our Site, such as the operating system, the Internet service providers utilized, location, the type of device and other similar information.

Web browser cookies

Our Site may use "cookies" to enhance the User experience. The User's web browser places cookies on their hard drive for record-keeping purposes and sometimes to track information about them. The User may choose to set their web browser to refuse cookies, or to alert you when cookies are being sent. If they do so, note that some parts of the Site may not function properly.

How we use collected information

Within the Community Portal registered users are free to talk openly with other professionals about everything that's important to them, from how to get their research papers published to the practice of medicine and everything in between.

Whatever Users share through the platform will remain anonymous outside the platform.

The Community Portal is currently free and, to ensure it remains that way, we may consider innovative ways to involve organizations, such as pharmaceutical companies, medical device companies and biotech firms, who are interested in the expert opinions of medical professionals. They may provide support in the form of funding. And, in the future, we may enable these companies to pose questions of specific Communities of Users. However, corporate users will not have direct access to the Portal, nor will they be able to ask questions directly of Users. A member of EASL's Governing Board will vet any survey, which is run in the future, before it is posted on the site.
EASL does not collect personal health information about Users or patients, nor does it collect or maintain any identifiers that could be used to re-identify patient data.

More broadly, EASL may collect and use Users personal information for the following purposes:

  • To personalize user experience
We may use information in the aggregate to understand how our Users as a single community or series of smaller communities use the services and resources provided on our Site.
  • To improve our Site
We may use feedback Users provide to improve our products and services.
  • To process payments
We may use the information Users provide about themselves when placing an order only to provide service to that order. We do not share this information with outside parties except to the extent necessary to provide the service.
  • To send periodic emails
We may use the email address to respond to User enquiries, questions, and/or other requests. If the User decides to opt-in to our mailing list, they will receive emails that may include event updates, information about diseases they are interested in, company news, updates, related product or service information, etc. If at any time the User would like to unsubscribe from receiving future emails, we include detailed unsubscribe instructions at the bottom of each email or User may contact us via our Site.
